The Fieldpiece digital megohm meter, model SMG5, is a compact stand-alone meter for testing the insulation of HVAC compressors.

The SMG5 offers a 1000 V voltage source, current monitoring and displays the resistance between the measuring points. Maximum output current is <1 mA.

It can be used to measure the condition of the insulation between the winding and earth in a motor, compressor or transformer. The scope of delivery includes a bag, a lead tip with crocodile clip and leads with detachable tips. To measure the resistance, a digital multimeter applies a low voltage (<1 V) to the measuring points and delivers only a few milliamperes. This voltage is not high enough to detect problems with high resistance, which may indicate moisture and other contaminants, and the current is too low to measure lower resistance values.
