A tool kit for air conditioning installation: what actually belongs in it
To install a split system you need five items you cannot do without: a flaring tool for the pipe connections, a pipe cutter with deburrer, a vacuum pump with a vacuum gauge, a torque wrench for the flare nuts, and a manifold gauge set with charging hoses. Anyone who also decommissions or converts systems needs a recovery machine and a refrigerant scale on top, making seven. That is the working basis; everything beyond it is convenience.

Flammable refrigerants: A2L and A3
R32 (A2L), and propane R290 (A3) all the more so, bring particular requirements: leak detectors need an approval for flammable refrigerants, recovery machines a corresponding certification. With A3 the working environment counts as well — where a flammable mixture can occur, spark-free or ATEX-capable equipment belongs with it. Which tools do I need to install an air conditioning system?

Is a complete tool set worth it, or should I buy individually?
Sets are cheaper and make sure the parts fit together, particularly hose connections and flare sizes. Buying individually pays off when you already own some equipment, or when you deliberately want to move up a tier on one item — typically the vacuum pump and the manifold.
Do I need special tools for R32?
Nothing changes for the flaring tool and the pipe tools, and a separate approval is usually not required for the vacuum pump. Where it is clearly regulated is the leak detector and the recovery machine; the selector points that out.
Is an analogue manifold enough, or do I need a digital one?
For occasional work a good analogue 2-way manifold is enough. In daily service a digital manifold saves time: superheat and subcooling are calculated directly instead of being read off and worked out.
Why a vacuum gauge if the manifold shows vacuum?
The manifold scale is far too coarse for fine vacuum. Only an electronic vacuum gauge reading in microns proves that the system really is dry and tight — the precondition for the manufacturer warranty and a long service life.
What does the F-gas Regulation require in terms of tools?
Work on the refrigerant circuit requires certification of competence; on decommissioning, refrigerant must be recovered with a recovery machine and the quantity documented (refrigerant scale). Leak checks are mandatory from 5 t CO₂ equivalent, and from 10 t for hermetically sealed systems.
