The manifold is how you read the pressures and work out superheat and subcooling. For the choice, what mostly counts is how often you use it, how many ways you need and which refrigerants you meet.

- Analogue or digital A good analogue 2-way manifold is entirely sufficient for occasional work. In daily service the digital version saves time on every job: superheat and subcooling are calculated directly instead of being read off, looked up in a table and worked out in your head. If you handle several refrigerants, you gain further because the fluid data is already stored.
- 2-way or 4-way 2-way covers measuring, evacuating and charging and is the standard for split installation. 4-way saves constant reconnecting during service and conversions, particularly when the vacuum pump and the refrigerant cylinder should both stay connected.
- Matching refrigerant scales The scales have to suit your systems. A set with R22, R12 and R502 scales is simply unreadable on a modern R32 system. Check before buying whether R32, R410A, R454B and — if relevant — R290 are covered.
- Hose connection size Air conditioning units come with 1/4" SAE; on many R410A and R32 units the suction side is 5/16" SAE. The matching set of charging hoses belongs in the buying decision, otherwise the right connection is missing on site.
- Non-return valves and sight glass Valves with a defined closing point stop refrigerant escaping when you disconnect; with A2L and A3 that is also a safety question. A sight glass shows immediately during charging whether liquid or vapour is being delivered.

Analogue or digital manifold: which pays off?
Rule of thumb: if you touch fewer than one system a week, a good analogue 2-way manifold is the right call. If you measure daily, the extra cost of the digital version comes back quickly through the arithmetic saved and the lower error rate.
Which hoses do I need for R32?
Hoses explicitly approved for the refrigerant, with matching connections. On many R32 units the suction side is 5/16" SAE rather than 1/4". An adapter set belongs in the van, but the basic kit should fit on its own.
Why does my manifold show a different superheat than expected?
The most common causes: the wrong refrigerant selected, a temperature probe poorly attached or not insulated, or the system simply has not settled yet. On analogue instruments the reading tolerance of the scale is added, and that matters at small superheat values.
