Frequently asked questions on the supply of refrigerants
Why do I need proof of certification for refrigerants?
Under § 15(1) of the German Chemicals Climate Protection Ordinance (ChemKlimaschutzV of 14.04.2026, in force since 17.04.2026), fluorinated greenhouse gases may only be sold to natural persons holding an F-gas certificate or to companies that employ such persons. The ordinance implements Article 10 of the F-gas Regulation (EU) 2024/573. Without proof of certification we are not allowed to deliver — not even against prepayment.
My certificate is from 2018 — is it still valid?
Yes. Certificates issued before 17.04.2026 under Implementing Regulation (EU) 2015/2067 (Category I–IV) remain valid under § 17(2) ChemKlimaschutzV until the end of 12.03.2029. From 13.03.2029, a refresher course is required to continue carrying out the activities (§ 17(3)). Implementing Regulation 2015/2067 itself has been replaced by (EU) 2024/2215.
Which category do I need for what?
Old categories (2015/2067), valid until 12.03.2029:
- I — all activities on F-gas systems, no charge-size limit
- II — all activities, limited to systems with a charge below 3 kg (6 kg for hermetically sealed systems)
- III — recovery on systems below 3 kg
- IV — leak checking only, without breaking into the refrigeration circuit
New categories (2024/2215): A1 (F-gases and hydrocarbons, no limit), A2 (with charge-size limit), B (CO₂), C (ammonia), D (recovery), E (leak checking). What is new is that the certification requirement now also covers alternative refrigerants.
Why can I only get R404A as reclaimed refrigerant?
R404A has a GWP of 3922. Since 01.01.2025, the use of fluorinated greenhouse gases with a GWP ≥ 2500 for the servicing and maintenance of refrigeration systems has been prohibited. Exempt are recycled and reclaimed refrigerants — these may still be used for service purposes until 01.01.2030. That is why we supply R404A and R507 as reclaimed refrigerant. For new systems, and in the medium term for servicing as well, alternatives such as R449A (GWP 1397) or R448A (GWP 1387) are the right way forward.
Does the certification requirement also apply to R290 and CO₂?
Propane (R290), CO₂ (R744) and ammonia (R717) are not fluorinated greenhouse gases — § 15(1) ChemKlimaschutzV does not apply to them. However, Article 10 of Regulation (EU) 2024/573 extended the certification requirement to activities on systems using these refrigerants; the new categories A1/A2 (hydrocarbons), B (CO₂) and C (ammonia) exist for this purpose. We therefore ask for the proof of certification here too — but for these substances it is not a prerequisite for the supply itself.
How is it shipped?
Refrigerant cylinders are dangerous goods under ADR. They are shipped to commercial delivery addresses with a delivery time and contact person — parcel lockers, PO boxes and purely private addresses are excluded. Returnable cylinders are supplied against a deposit; we take back the empties. Freight and deposit are shown separately in the quotation.
